Quilloer
Privacy policy
Last updated 4 November 2026
Quilloer (quilloer.com) is a place for long reads written by people. This page says what we keep about you, why, who sees it, and what you can do about it. In short: we keep what the site needs to work, we show only what you publish, we do not sell anything about you, and there are no ads or trackers.
What we keep when you join
- Your account: your name, your email address, your handle, and your password, kept only as a one-way hash that cannot be turned back into the password.
- Your profile, if you add to it: a bio, a photo, the topics you follow, and your settings.
- Which invite link brought you, if one did, so that the member who invited you is credited.
What you make here
Your stories and their drafts (saved as you write), the images you add, your responses, reactions and claps, the stories you share and bookmark, your highlights and their topics, the writers you follow and subscribe to, and any reports you send.
Writing effort
While you write in the editor we count how long you write, how many keys you press, and how many characters were typed or pasted. These are numbers only: we do not record which keys you press, and nothing is read from your clipboard except what you paste into your story. We also keep the kind of device each session was on (phone, tablet or computer) and its system (such as iOS or Windows), nothing more precise. The counts, and the devices, are shown with your published stories. How writing effort is measured.
Reading time
While you are signed in and reading someone else's story, the page counts the seconds it is on screen while you are reading (you scrolled, moved or pressed a key in the last minute), and we add them up by day. Reading your own stories is not counted. Over the last 90 days, this and your writing time make the balance of reading and writing on your profile. Others see that balance unless you turn off Show when I'm reading or writing; we do not keep which stories you read for how long.
Reading and writing now
While a story or the editor is open, the page tells the server every few seconds, so that a story can show how many people are reading it and who is writing it. This is kept for under a minute. Readers are only ever counted, never named. Your name shows as writing on your stories, and as reading on your profile, unless you turn off Show when I'm reading or writing in your settings.
Visitors, signed in or not
- We do not store your IP address. To count visits once a day (readers now, visits through an invite link, where readers came from, shares), we make a code from your IP address and browser with a secret key. It changes every day and cannot be turned back into either.
- When you arrive from another site, we keep only that site's name (for example facebook.com), not the address of the page you came from.
- We keep ordinary server logs (the address asked for and when) to keep the site running.
Cookies
- Sign-in: keeps you signed in, for up to a year or until you sign out. It is signed, so it cannot be forged.
- Invite: remembers for 30 days which invite link you followed, so the member who invited you is credited if you join.
- Display: your page colour, font, size and margins, for a year.
There are no advertising or analytics cookies, and our pages load no scripts from other sites.
We email you issues from the writers you subscribe to, and the weekly digest if you have it on. To send them, our email provider (Resend) receives your address and the email. You can turn the digest off in your settings and unsubscribe from any writer on their profile.
Who sees what
- Everyone: your name, handle, bio and photo, your published stories and their writing effort, your responses and reactions, the stories you share, your badges and activity, and how many followers you have.
- Only you: your email address, bookmarks, read-later list and highlights.
- You and the people you invite to a story: its drafts.
- Moderators: reports, and what was reported, to review them. The member you report is not told who reported them.
We do not sell or rent anything about you, and we do not share it with anyone except as needed to run the site (the email provider and where the site is hosted), or when the law requires it.
How long we keep it
Your account and what you made are kept while you have an account. What you delete (a story, a response, a highlight, your photo) is removed from the site at once. Daily visitor codes are only useful on their day.
Your choices
You can see and change your details in your settings, and delete your stories, responses and highlights at any time. To get a copy of what we hold about you, to correct it, or to close your account and delete it, write to hello@quilloer.com. We answer within 30 days. Where the law gives you more rights over your data, you have them here too.
Children
Quilloer is not for children under 13, or under the age your country sets for agreeing to this yourself.
Changes
When this policy changes, the new version is posted here with its date. If a change matters to how your information is used, we tell you on the site before it applies.
